Held every December since 1987, these annual Christmas parties for homeless and impoverished children are our primary activity, currently requiring approximately 60% of our time. We produce all of the events and coordinate the participation of the various schools, service organizations, and individuals.
Staged in Phoenix at the Memorial Plaza directly across the street from the Arizona State Capitol and frequently attended by the Governor, the celebration has averaged between 350 and 500 children each year. The children participate in over 15 different activities including decorating the tree, doing various art projects, visiting Santa Claus, getting presents and bags of food for themselves and their family members, going to a petting zoo, enjoying amusement rides, lunch, and various types of entertainment.
By 2006, the event had grown to serve 1,300 children, requiring it to become a multi-day event spread over two weeks. 85.5% of the children were from minority groups, 44.5% were English language learners, and 88% fell below the federal poverty guidelines. Projections for the 2007 Christmas Tree Project indicate that 7,500 children will attend during the three weeks immediately before Christmas.
By producing this event, we create a nurturing environment where the community can come together to both actively address the primary immediate needs of these impoverished children and also to plant the seed that may break the cycle of poverty by boosting the children's self-esteem, self-image, and concept of self-worth.
